Kerala Library Association

Professional Associations were late to emerge in Kerala because of the fact that qualified librarians were few and far between till the establishment of the Department of Library Science, University of Kerala in 1961. With the increase in number a strong feeling developed among professional librarians that an Association should be formed which should largely confine to professional and academic matters. As a result, Kerala Library Association (KLA) with membership restricted to professionally qualified persons was formed on 13.11.1972. Prof. K.A. Issac and Sri. P.V. Varghese were elected President and General Secretary respectively. The Association secured registration as a society under Charitable Societies Act on 8.12.1972 and became the first lawful body of professional librarians in Kerala. : Read full text


Shri Kadakampally Surendran, Minister for Co- Operation, Tourism and Devaswom, Govt of Kerala inaugurated the KLA National Conference on Corporate Librarianship held at  Padmam Auditorium at Institute of Management in Government (IMG), Thiruvananthapuram during 14-15 December 2018.  The meeting was presided over by Dr P. P. Ajayakumar, Pro Vice-Chancellor, University of Kerala. Dr K. P. Vijayakumar, President, KLA, welcomed the gathering. The souvenir, brought out in connection with the conference, was released by Shri Kadakampally Surendran and the first copy was received by Shri H R Mohan, Former Associate Vice President, The Hindu and ICT Consultant, Chennai. Prof. M.K Sanu, famous writer and critic inaugurating the Third Librarians' Meet and the Annual General Body Meeting of Kerala Library Association Ernakulam Region on 13th January 2018 at St. Teresa’s College Auditorium, Ernakulam.

Dr. K. P. Vijayakumar, President, KLA presided over the function. Dr. M. D. Baby, HOD, DLIS, Rajagiri School of Library and Information Sciences, Dr. P. K. Sureshkumar, General Secretary, KLA, Shri P. J. Manuel, President, KLA Ernakulam Region and Dr. Shibu Ray S., Secretary, KLA Ernakulam Region were also present. BLISc and MLIsc 1st Rank holders, PhD holders and retired professionals in the region were felicitated on the occasion.

Khan, Head, DLIS, Mangalore University delivering the 12th Prof K A Isaac Commemoration Lecture on the topic “The Library and Information profession: Think beyond” on 4 November 2017 at DLIS Hall, University of Kerala. Dr K. P. Vijayakumar, President, KLA, presided over the function. Shri K. P. Sadasivan, Consultant (Library), IITMK, Trivandrum & Formerly, Head, Knowledge Resource Centre, NIIST, Trivandrum shared his reminiscences of Prof Isaac with the audience. Shri G. S. Harikumar, Vice President, KLA, welcomed the gathering and Dr. P. K. Sureshkumar, General Secretary, KLA, proposed the vote of thanks. Dr S Ravi, Professor & Head, DDE – Library &  Science Wing, Annamalai University delivering the 11thProf K A Isaac Commemoration Lecture on the topic 'Relevance of Ranganathan's Seminal Contributions in the Digital Era' on 3 November 2016 at DLIS Hall, University of Kerala. Dr K. P. Vijayakumar presided over the function. Dr A Gopikuttan, former Head, DLIS shared his reminiscences of Prof Isaac with the audience. Prof. Isaac's wife, MrsChechamma Isaac & son, Prof Kurien Isaac, were also present on the occasion.

Radhakrishnan, distinguished space scientist inaugurating an interactive session on "Libraries in Transition: Millennium User’s Experiences & Perceptions" organized in connection with the National Library Week celebrations at the DLIS Lecture Hall, University of Kerala on 21 November 2016. DrVilakkudyRajendran, former Joint Director, State Institute of Languages, Dr B Arundhathi,  playback singer and Associate Professor & Head, Department of MusicDrHumayunKabir, Head, DLIS and Dr K. P. Vijayakumar, President , KLA are also seen.
